Wells family papers, 1794-1863.

Primarily family correspondence among three generations of the Wells family of Wethersfield and Glastonbury, Connecticut, and Pompey and Naples, New York. The earliest family member in the collection is Elijah Wells, 1751-1796, who is represented by his estate records and two military commissions or appointments. Elijah Wells (1755-1830) married Lucy Sellew before moving to New York. Correspondence kept the family together, and both Elijah and Lucy's correspondence is included, along with their estate papers. Their son Elijah (b. 1809), a merchant in Naples, New York, has letters from business associates and from his brothers Asa H., Russell, and George Wells. Of interest are a series of poems, some addressed to Lucy Wells, one on her marriage and at least two on the death of a child.
